What is a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and how does it work?
A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a component in diesel engines that captures and removes soot (fine particulate matter) from exhaust gases before they’re released into the air.
DPFs are required on most modern diesel engines to meet emissions regulations in both Canada and the United States, including standards set by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). An example of this would be Tier 4 emissions standards.
Over time, the filter fills up and must either regenerate (burn off the soot) or be cleaned or replaced. A properly functioning DPF is critical for maintaining engine performance, staying compliant, and keeping trucks and equipment operating efficiently.
